Sun Conures frequent palm groves, open forests and savannahs.  They are generally seen in flocks and this brilliantly coloured bird, with it's screeching call, always betrays it's presence.  Large flocks will congregate to feed in trees bearing ripening fruit.

Their diet is seeds, nuts, fruit, berries, buds and blossoms.

They nest in holes in trees, wood pecker holes are favoured.  A normal clutch is 3-4 eggs.

The Sun Conure is mostly bright yellow in colour, darkening to orange colour around their eyes and on their chest.  Their flight feathers are blue and green and their tail is yellow melting into green with blue on the tips.  A very striking bird indeed!

Pet potential:  Sun Conures are inquisitive and playful, active, courageous and curious and they love to play with toys.  They enjoy chewing toys and toys to swing from like chains, ropes and swings, ringing bells are also a hit with them!  They are easy to toilet train and are very quick to learn.  They love attention and like being handled and cuddled by their owners but may be wary of strangers.  They love snuggling in your pocket or up your sleeve. They can be very noisy if they see something unusual like and cat or person outside, a great earlier warning when visitors call!

Talking ability: Poor

Noise level:  Low

Cage requirements:  Minimum 24 x24 x 36 inches

Interesting fact: These birds are generally regarded as common, kind of like our Starlings.  They are popular at pets locally and unfortunately still trapped for the pet industry.
