Red Masked Conures occur in the wooded range of the dry tropical zone of Ecuador and North West Peru where it is fairly common.  They lead a fairly nomadic existence, their habitat ranges from wooded country to dry scrub land and sparsely vegetated savannah.  They are a bird of low lying country in regions up to 500 metres.  During the breeding season they are seen in pairs otherwise they fly in large noisy conspicuous flocks.

Their diet consists of fruit, berries, nuts, leaf buds, seed and blossom.

They nest in hollows in trees, a normal clutch is 3-4 eggs.  When fledged the babies will stay with their parents for several weeks.

The Red Masked Conure is one of the larger members of the Aratinga family.  Their plumage is mainly green with lighter green feathers on their breast and thighs.  Their forehead, crown and cheeks are red as is the bend of their wings.  Their wing tips are a bluey green and their tail is green with blue at the tip of the tail.  Their eye ring is white and their beak is horn coloured.

Pet potential: Most Aratinga Conures make good pets and the Red masked is no exception.  They are very active and playful birds and need lots of toys to keep them occupied and happy.  They love bathing and need access to water so they can bathe everyday.  They will aslo enjoy showering under a dripping tap.  Their talking ability is good and really the only drawback, as with all Aratinga Conures, is their raucous call.  If you hav close neighbours this is not the pet for you.

Noise level: High

Minimum cage size: Minimum 2 x 2 x 4 foot

Interesting fact:  Young Red Masked Conures are completely green.  Their red feathers do not start to appear until they are about 5 months old.
